Tips for Planting Bulbs this Fall

October 6, 2017

1. Quality

When selecting your bulbs, look for those that are plump and firm. Avoid any that are soft and mushy, or have mold. Also the bigger the better; generally the bigger the bulb the more they bloom compared to smaller bulbs if the same variety.

2. Location

Health bulbs will fail if planted in the wrong spot. Majority of bulbs thrive best in full sun. This means 6 hours of direct sun a day. Well drained soil is preferred as well.

3. Timing

Spring blooming bulbs like tulips and daffodils should be planted in September or October. Once the the temperatures have cooled. Summer blooming bulbs such as Dahlias and Gladiolus are best planted in the spring, after the threat of frost has past.

4. Depth

How deep are you suppose to plant bulbs? Such a common question. Usually, you dig a hole two to theee times deeper than the height of the bulb. So, if you have a 3 inch tall bulb, dig a hole 6-9 inches deep. However, there are exceptions. Check the planting directions that some with the bulbs for more information.

5. Right Side Up

Make sure to place the bulb with the pointy side up! (If you don't see a pointy side, look for where the roots come out, that end goes down).

6. Water

Give them a good drink after you plant them. That will encourage them to send out roots and become established more quickly. A good watering will Leonard are pockets in the soil that could dry out your bulb. Just be careful not to over water your bulb as this can lead to rot.

Design Ideas:

1. Plant your bulbs in planters/ pots/ containers.

2. Layer perennial bulbs - different dimensions of height.

3. Plant them in your lawn! Fun way to boost colour in your yard. Snow crocus and Snow drops bloom & finish before your lawn starts up for the season.

Tip: try planting funky textures & varieties you've never tried before; like the 'Secret Parrot' tulip pictured above.
